Most of us know how viral the Ice Bucket Challenge (IBC) has become around the world. For those who do not know, the IBC was created to raise awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
This is truly a terrible disease to see someone go through. As of September 5th 2014 the ALS foundation has raise $109.1 Million dollars from the Ice Bucket Challenge, which will be used to research ways to fight this disease. Below are some videos and pictures of ERC personnel taking the challenge. I know there are many more ERC employees who have taken the challenge and posted your videos to other media sites. If you would like your video out on the ERC blog, just email me the youtube link.
REMEMBER that if you are nominated, whether you take the challenge or not, you are encourage to donate to fund the research. That is what this is all about! If you feel the urge to donate you can do so here: http://www.alsa.org/fight-als/ice-bucket-challenge.html.
